If your day-to-day already involves a self-custody wallet, the 23 cards here are the small subset of products that don't require you to step out of that workflow to spend. The category includes both pure self-custody cards (Gnosis Pay, MetaMask Card, Pyra) and hybrid models that hold custody but read balances directly from your wallet (Holyheld, Tria). The interesting design choice on every one of these is how the card avoids forcing a withdrawal step. Gnosis Pay does it by issuing the card against a Safe smart account that you control; MetaMask does it through a Linea-side balance that mirrors your main wallet; Ether.fi Cash sidesteps the whole question by issuing against staked-ETH collateral. None of these are quite as fast as a traditional debit card on settlement (DeFi-native typically takes 2-5 seconds longer at swipe), and none completely eliminate the gas-fee question. But the alternative, withdrawing from a DEX or LP to a CEX, then to a card, is materially worse on fees and on the privacy properties most DeFi users came for. If those properties don't matter to you, custodial is fine.
