Card Overview
The PayPal Debit Card is a Mastercard debit card issued by The Bancorp Bank, N.A., tied to a required PayPal Balance account. Here is the catch: this is not a crypto-spending card in the way people expect. The card draws only from your fiat PayPal balance. To spend crypto you first sell it to PayPal cash, paying PayPal's own conversion spread, and only then can the card touch the money. There is no at-the-register auto-conversion like a Crypto.com or Coinbase card. Spending crypto directly is a separate online-only 'Checkout with Crypto' feature, not a function of the debit card.
Custody is custodial. USD balances may be eligible for pass-through FDIC insurance through Program Banks, subject to conditions, but PayPal itself is not a bank and is not FDIC insured. No monthly card fee. The headline reward is 5% back as points on one self-selected category (restaurants, groceries, fuel, apparel, others), chosen each month and capped at $1,000 of spend, so about $50 a month in value at most. ATMs are free at MoneyPass, $2.50 elsewhere, cash reload up to $3.95. Foreign spend costs 2.5%. US only, live and enrolling as of today.
Best fit: US PayPal users who hold crypto inside PayPal and want a no-monthly-fee debit card with strong single-category cashback for everyday domestic spending. Wrong card if you want to swipe crypto at the register, or if you spend or travel abroad.
PayPal Debit Card is a free Mastercard on the PayPal Balance account, issued by The Bancorp Bank for US users. It earns 5% back in points on a chosen monthly category, withdraws free at MoneyPass ATMs, and lives in Apple, Google or Samsung Pay. The crypto angle is indirect: sell BTC, ETH or PYUSD to your balance in the app — where PYUSD also earns 4% a year — then spend it anywhere Mastercard works.
This is a Mastercard crypto card. It offers cashback rewards. Available to US residents.
